HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - Marshall volleyball will hold its first open scrimmage of the season on Sunday at 2 p.m. inside the Cam Henderson Center.
The scrimmage is open to the public, so fans are encouraged to attend and cheer on the Thundering Herd in anticipation of the 2016 season. Marshall will host its annual Green and White scrimmage on Sunday, Aug. 21 at 1 p.m.
Marshall hopes to build on last season as the Herd finished with a 16-14 record and the eighth seed in the 2015 Conference USA Championship. The Thundering Herd returns 11 letterwinners, including 2016 Preseason All-C-USA selection Ally Kiekover. Kiekover led the conference with a .402 hitting percentage a year ago and paced the Herd with 74 blocks. Also returning for Marshall is Cassie Weaver, Allie Kellerman and Kayla Simmons. Weaver led MU with 387 kills last year, while Kellerman set a single-season record with 555 digs. Simmons had a team-high 1,112 assists. Marshall welcomes seven newcomers.
This season the Thundering Herd and West Virginia are co-hosting the Capital Classic volleyball tournament at the Charleston Civic Center from Sept. 2-3 in Charleston, W.Va. Indiana State and Morehead State will also be competing in the event. Herd fans can purchase tickets through the Marshall Athletics ticket office by visiting HerdZone.com or by calling 800-THE-HERD.
Marshall begins the 2016 season at the Hoosier Invitational in Bloomington, Ind. The Herd opens the tournament against Evansville on Friday, Aug. 26, while facing Northern Kentucky and the host school Indiana University on Saturday.
