HUNTINGTON, W.Va. - The Marshall men's soccer team dropped the 2016 season opener to Western Michigan Friday night at Hoops Family Field, 2-0.
"It was a tough first game for us tonight," assistant coach Thomas Olivier said. "From the get go they jumped on us early and we couldn't establish a rhythm or any sustained possession. WMU is a good team."
Junior Nate Himes (Tampa, Fla.) got the start in the net for Marshall. The Herd and the Broncos played to a scoreless tie in the first half. The Broncos had six shots in the first half.
Western Michigan scored its first goal in the 52nd minute and then again in the 79th minute. The Broncos also defeated the Herd 2-0 in 2015.
"It was a good opponent for us to kick the season off with because the game gave us some valuable lessons for us for the next few games," coach Olivier said. "We go right back at it on Sunday and that is the best thing that can happen to us."
Marshall returns to the field Sunday to take on the Detroit Titans with kickoff set for 1 p.m. from Hoops Family Field. The Titans played Pittsburgh to a 0-0 draw Friday night.
