FARMVILLE, Va. - Freshman forward Jordan Sackaris took a header from senior Sydney Arnold and beat Longwood goalie Maria Kirby one-on-one in the 52nd minute to give the visiting Marshall women's soccer team a 1-0 victory Friday evening over the Lancers.
Marshall improved to 1-2 on the season, while Longwood dropped to 0-2.
"Team played well for 90 minutes against a very good Longwood team," Herd coach Kevin Long said. "We had several players step up, raising their game from a week ago."
The Thundering Herd outshot the Lancers 17-7 with Arnold and sophomore midfielder Jayne Lawman firing four times to lead the way. Sackaris has all three of Marshall's 2016 goals on just five shots and Arnold now has three assists.
"As a team, we were far more attacking oriented," coach Long said. "It was great to see Jordan (Sackaris) get the game winner."
Thundering Herd junior goalie Emily Moreland made four saves in the shutout victory, including just two over the game's final 75 minutes in a stout overall defensive effort.
"The first shutout of the year," coach Long stated. "It was a solid step toward where we want to be, moving forward."
The two teams battled evenly in the first half before Marshall sophomore midfielder Shontelle Smith clanged a shot off the crossbar in the 44th minute.
The Thundering Herd will open its 2016 home schedule next weekend when IUPUI visits Friday (7 p.m.) and ETSU hits town on Sunday (4 p.m.).
