WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - The Marshall women's soccer team closed out its non-conference schedule with a 2-1 defeat to the William & Mary Tribe Sunday afternoon at Busch Stadium in Williamsburg, Va. The Thundering Herd compiled 12 shots, three shots on goal, three corner kicks and eight saves in the 90 minute affair.
Marshall's overall record falls to 2-4-2 (0-1-0 in Conference USA play), while William & Mary's overall record improves to 6-3-0.
Both teams were even throughout the first half with both sides tallying six shots each in the first half.
The Tribe broke the deadlock early in the first half when redshirt freshman Sarah Segan put away a long ball from junior Rachel Moore in the sixth minute to tally her fifth goal of the season.
The Herd battled back and tied the match in the 19th minute. Sophomore Shontelle Smith collected her second goal of the season when senior Sydney Arnold found Smith at the top of the penalty box, who then slotted the ball in the right side of the goal. The assist gives Arnold her team-leading third assist and ninth point of the season.
William & Mary pulled away in the second half to seal the victory when Segan collected her sixth goal of the season when a deflected shot landed at her feet and she put it in the back of the net.
The Tribe finished the contest with a 14-12 shot advantage, while freshman Megan Bonelli collected a career and season-high eight saves. Bonelli's eight saves mark the first time a Marshall freshman did so in a match since Lindsey Kerns (2009-12) made eight saves in the 1-0 defeat at Kentucky in 2010.
