Herd Track and Field to Compete at Conference USA Championships

HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall University track and field team will compete Saturday and Sunday at the Conference USA Indoor Championships in Birmingham, Alabama. The conference meet closes out the indoor season, and is hosted by UAB.

The championship meet will begin at 10 a.m. ET on Saturday with combined events the pentathlon and heptathlon. In the pentathlon, freshmen Torie Derrow and sophomore Sarah Bever are scheduled to compete.
Saturday's field events are scheduled to feature sophomore Lauren George in the long jump, and four Marshall athletes in the weight throw. Freshman Ericka Budd, sophomore Whitney McAtee, senior Mercedes Dowell, and school-record holder sophomore Hasana Clark, who is currently ranked fourth in Conference USA in the weight throw.
Saturday's running events feature preliminaries in the 1-mile run, 60 meter hurdles, 60 meter dash, the 400m, 800m, and the 200m. Finals in the 5000m and the distance medley relay conclude the night.
Scheduled competitors include senior school record holder in the 1-mile, Andrea Porter, freshman Safiyyah Mitchell in the 60 meter hurdles, who is currently ranked third in the C-USA, and sophomore Adriana Cook in the 5,000 meter finals. She is the Marshall school record holder in the event, and ranked fifth in the C-USA.
Sunday will get under way at 10 a.m. ET, and will run all day. Running events will include finals in all the preliminary events from Saturday, as well as the 3,000m run, and the 4x400m relay. Field events include the high jump, triple jump, and shot put. Sophomore Elena Marchand is scheduled to compete in the shot put, where she is currently ranked second in the conference only behind Brashe Wood of Southern Miss.
"I really think we'll have the highest point total we've ever scored at the Conference USA Indoor Championships," head coach Jeff Small said. "We also hope for our highest place finish ever. The kids have to come through and do it for all the events for that to take shape. I think we can score in a lot of different areas."
