HUNTINGTON, W.Va.--The Marshall University track and field begins part two of its 2016-17 season on Thursday with the Bob Davidson Spring Kick-Off in High Point, North Carolina. The competition marks the first outdoor meet of the season for the Herd.
The meet is the first competition for Marshall since the 2017 Conference USA Indoor Championships last month in Birmingham, Alabama. The Herd finished seventh out of 13 schools at that meet.
The team competes Thursday through Saturday at High Point University. Thursday is only for combined events; the men's decathlon and the women's heptathlon. Marshall has two scheduled competitors in the heptathlon; sophomore Sarah Bever and freshman Torie Derrow. The seven-event competition begins at 3:00 p.m. on Thursday with the 100 meter hurdles.
The outdoor season brings up the addition of several events, including the javelin throw, steeplechase, 100 meter dash, and the discus.
In the javelin throw, Marshall has two athletes to watch out for with sophomore Heidi Heiniger and graduate transfer Alexis Montes. Heiniger placed second at last year's Conference USA Outdoor Championships as a freshmen. Montes competing for West Liberty University last season placed seventh at the NCAA Division-II Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
"After a record setting indoor campaign we are really looking forward to this outdoor season," head coach Jeff Small said. "We had a good period of training since the conference indoor championships which will help us pick up where we left off when we get outside. Our team should be even stronger with the addition of the javelin, discus, 400 meter hurdles, steeplechase, 10K, and the 4x100 meter relay events. We can't wait to get started."
A recap and pictures will be available following Friday and Saturday's competition. Follow the team on Twitter @HerdTFXC for videos, pictures, results, and more from the team's meet at High Point University. #OneHerd
