Herd's Robinson Wins Kingsmill Intercollegiate
3/21/2017 12:00:00 AM | Men's Golf
WILLIAMSBURG, Va. - Marshall men's golfer Clark Robinson was named co-champion of the Kingsmill Intercollegiate after the event's final 18-hole round.
With the win, Robinson becomes the first Herd men's golfer to be named a tournament champion since Logan Lagodilch won the Hummingbird Intercollegiate in 2014. It gives the senior his second individual victory and head coach Matt Grobe his fifth individual crown. Robinson shared the co-champion honors with Cole Miller and Ryan Dornes of Penn State.
During the first round, Robinson finished with a 1-over-par 71 and birdied on three holes, with two being on the front nine. It was good enough to place the senior ninth in Round 1. Round 2 was Robinson's best day and helped him win the tournament, as he tied a career-low 4-under 66. The South Windsor, Conn., native shot his best golf on the par 4s and averaged a 3.83 on those holes.
On the final round, Robinson shot a 2-over-par 72, which gave him an overall score 1-under-par 209. Freshman Thomas Frazier continued Robinson's momentum from day two and shot a career-low 2-under-par 68 on the day. Overall, Marshall finished at seventh with a 39-over-par 879.
ON THE LEADERBOARD
Tennessee shot a 10-over 850 to win the tournament. Penn State became the runner up by one stroke and shot an 11-over 851.
COACH'S CORNER
Head coach Matt Grobe
"It was so fun watching Clark coming down the stretch. He made an incredible up-and-down from a bunker 40 yards out on his final hole. It is so tough to play with the lead, as Clark did today, but he finished with an individual title.
"As a team, we struggle a bit today. We need to finish stronger when we get into contention. It was really good to see Thomas Frazier shoot a 68. He joined us this spring, but is really making an impact. We are heading to the Furman Intercollegiate now, so hopefully this tournament gives us momentum."
