KNOXVILLE, Tenn. - The Marshall baseball team suffered a 7-1 loss in its midweek game against the Tennessee Volunteers Wednesday evening at Lindsey Nelson Stadium.

The Thundering Herd (10-8) struck first in the top of the second inning. Right fielder Cory Garrastazu doubled down the left field line with two outs. Center fielder Shane Hanon followed in the ensuing at-bat with a single up the middle to score Garrastazu.

Tennessee (13-5) took the lead in the bottom of the third by pushing across two runs. Shortstop Max Bartlett hit a double to right center field with one out. He later advanced to third on a wild pitch. Bartlett came around to score on a Brodie Leftridge double to right center field. After a Volunteer walk and strikeout, Jordan Rodgers doubled down the left field line to score Leftridge.

The Volunteers tacked on a run in the bottom of the sixth inning. Rodgers led off the frame with a double down the left field line. He was moved over to third on a ground out from first baseman Andre Lipcius. Designated hitter Pete Derkay singled through the right side to score Rodgers in the next at-bat.

Tennessee put the game out of reach for the Thundering Herd in the eighth by scoring four runs on three hits. Right fielder Dom Thorton had a three-run double to left field.

Marshall was led at the plate by Garrastazu, Hanon and Sam Finfer. Garrastazu was 1-for-3 with a double and a run scored. Hanon was 1-for-3 and a RBI. Finfer had one hit.

Despite being credited with the loss, starting pitcher Brad O'Connor tossed five strong innings for the Herd. The Springfield, Ore., native had three strikeouts and allowed two runs on four hits. He was relieved by Matt Reed, Will Ray, Hunter Sexton and Jacob Bradley.

Up next, Marshall closes out its four-game road trip with a three-game series against Conference USA foe Southern Miss (17-4, 3-0 C-USA).
