HUNTINGTON, W.Va.-The Marshall University track and field team sends athletes to the 123rd annual Penn Relays in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. The three-day meet begins Thursday at Franklin Field at the University of Pennsylvania.

The meet is the oldest and largest track and field competition in the United States, originating in April of 1895. The 2017 edition will feature hundreds of schools from the high school, collegiate, and club level entering thousands of athletes.

A year ago, the Herd's 4x100 meter relay team in the college division won. The team consisting of Kametra Byrd, Shanice Johnson, Asia Bange, and Hope Julmiste ran an impressive time of 46.25 seconds to take the victory. Additional top-10 finishes came from Antonique Butler, who finished sixth in the triple jump, and Heidi Heiniger, who finished ninth in the javelin throw.

This year, the Herd travels 21 athletes to Philadelphia. Five different relay teams compete; the 4x100 meter relay, 4x400 meter relay, 4x800 meter relay, distance medley relay, and the shuttle hurdle relay.

A full list of Marshall competitors and their events can be found on the Penn Relays website here. The first athlete to compete for Marshall is sophomore Elena Marchand in the discus throw at 9 a.m. Thursday. A full schedule can be found here.

"This is an exciting week for all our kids, especially our runners," head coach Jeff Small said. "This is like the Super Bowl of track and field. There will probably be 20,000 people in the stands on Thursday, another 30,000 on Friday, and 40,000 on Saturday. We'll get to see a bunch of Olympians, world champions, and great teams. We're really excited."
