HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's soccer team fell 2-1 Friday night to the Rice Owls at Hoops Family Field. Junior Marah Abu-Tayeh scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season.

The Thundering Herd is now 5-7-2 and 3-4-0 in Conference USA play. The Owls improve to 5-7 and 3-3 in conference action.

"We gave away two goals within minutes of restarts," Herd head coach Kevin Long said. "We gave up the game-winner within minutes after halftime and the first goal came within the first three minutes. The sluggish starts directly have affected our results.

"We'll find through statistics that possession of the game, especially in the second half, we dominated play. We had it in our half almost the entire time and played much better."

Rice scored first in the third minute on a header off a cross from the left side. Marshall kept the Owls off the scoreboard for the remainder of the half and went into halftime down, 1-0.

The Owls extended the lead just one minute and 30 seconds into the second half. Marshall got within one in the 59th minute as Abu-Tayeh took a pass from her sister Farah Abu-Tayeh and tapped it passed the keeper. Marshall outshot Rice in the second half, 8-7, with three shots on goal. Herd junior keeper Megan Bonelli recorded four saves in the contest including a leaping punch-out late in the second half to keep it a one-goal game.

"(Bonelli's) been coming up big," coach Long said. "That's why she's here. We knew that she was a talented 'keeper on the recruiting side and she's starting to show that on a daily basis in training and certainly in games. Even on the first goal, she came out and made a big save off the corner and we couldn't manage the rebound so they scored."
Marshall returns to the pitch on Sunday, Oct. 14 at 12 p.m., against No. 24 North Texas.
