"I'm looking for a response from the lads after last week's capitulation at ETSU," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "Fort Wayne provides a good opportunity to do this, as last year we lost to them up in Fort Wayne in a match we had every opportunity to win. So, we need to prove we are better than last week, and prove that we are improving from last year.
"We are getting into the thick of C-USA matches now, and if we want to have a chance at winning, we need to put together a complete, 90-minute performance."
Marshall is coming off a 2-1 loss at ETSU and prior to that, a 4-2 win over Conference USA foe Old Dominion. Five different players have scored two goals this season for the Herd while four more have chipped in one goal each. Junior Jonas Westmeyer leads the squad in assists with three and points with seven. Redshirt junior keeper Paulo Pita has recorded 30 saves to go along with three shutouts.
The Mastodons are looking to get off a three-match non-winning streak. Purdue Fort Wayne lost to Omaha (4-1), tied Detroit Mercy (2-2) and lost at Denver (2-0). The Mastodons have scored 27 goals this season with Matthew Lieshout leading the way with nine. Blake Cearns has scored five and Romain Lopez is next with four and leads the team with seven assists. Keeper Tor Erik Larsen is second in the nation in total saves with 65. Larsen has allowed 23 goals and has delivered two shutouts.
This will be the fourth all-time meeting between the two teams and Marshall leads 2-1. Purdue Fort Wayne won the most recent match in 2017, 2-1, in Fort Wayne.
Following the midweek match, Marshall travels to No. 4 Kentucky on Saturday, Oct. 13. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m.
