Three players score for the Herd in the win

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall men's soccer team recorded its fourth shutout of the season, defeating Purdue Fort Wayne 3-0, Tuesday evening at Hoops Family Field.
The Thundering Herd improves to 4-5-2 while the Mastodons fall to 6-6-1.
"We kind of let down a bit," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "It became easy being up three goals in the second half. I would like to see us still play at the top rhythm when that happens. However, that was the best 20 minutes we have had. We killed them in the first 20 minutes with pressure. Jamil (Roberts) and JP (Rylah) were pressing, playing hard up the field. I thought we saw some areas where I thought we could take advantage."
Marshall dominated possession throughout most of the match as the defense continued to take away chances from Purdue Fort Wayne.
"Our defense has been really strong," coach Grassie added. "It's nice to have Chris Taibi back. He is such a huge presence for us and very rarely gets beat. Defending is a team thing. You have to have a whole team effort. It makes the defenders job so much easier and gives them smaller angles and less ground to cover."
Redshirt junior keeper Paulo Pita recorded five saves before coming out of the contest with just over 22 minutes remaining. Senior Ben Martinez played the rest of the way and did not face a shot on goal as his defense held tight.
The Herd got on the board in the 18th minute as sophomore Jamil Roberts headed in his second goal of the season on a deep crossing pass from freshman Jan-Erik Leinhos. Just three minutes and one second later, freshman JP Rylah knocked in his own rebound to put Marshall up 2-0. It was Rylah's third goal of the year.
Sophomore Pedro Dolabella finished off the scoring, with just six seconds left until halftime, on a play very similar to Roberts' goal. Dolabella put in a header off a deep pass from the right side by Leinhos. For Dolabella, it was his first goal of the season and fifth of his career.
Marshall returns to the pitch on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 7 p.m., in Lexington against No. 5 Kentucky. The Herd will be back at Hoops Family Field on Oct. 16 against Northern Kentucky.
