CARBONDALE, Ill. – The Marshall women's basketball team fell at Southern Illinois, 58-49, Saturday afternoon from the SIU Arena.

The Thundering Herd is now 0-3. The Salukis move to 2-1.

"We just couldn't get some shots to drop for us today," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "We had some opportunities late but just couldn't get it to fall. We struggled from the free throw line as well and that is something we have to work on. But, I liked our intensity and fight in the second half so overall I feel like we can walk away from SIU with some positives."

Sophomore Taylor Pearson and Kristen Mayo led the Herd with 10 points each. Redshirt senior Taylor Porter scored eight points – all coming in the second half – and tied a career-high with eight rebounds. Senior Shayna Gore scored five and freshman Lorelei Roper scored a season-high five points with four rebounds.

Both teams struggled offensively as each squad kept up defensive pressure throughout the contest. Marshall shot 33.9 percent (19-56) and SIU hit 35.2 percent (19-54) in the game. Each team also scored 26 points in the paint.

The Herd trailed by four at the end of the first quarter. To start the second period, Marshall kept the Salukis off the scoreboard for the first five minutes and 51 seconds, and a total of seven minutes going back to the first quarter. Both teams scored just eight points in the second, and the Herd trailed by four, 25-21 at the half.

Marshall came out in the second half with a lot of pressure and speed and put pressure. Porter scored six of her eight points in the third including two right-handed floaters in the paint on a drive. However, the Herd could not close the gap as each team scored 17, and Marshall still trailed by four at the end of the period.

The Herd closed to within two points, 42-40, before the Salukis went on a run and extended the lead to double-digits. Marshall fought to the final whistle but SIU took advantage of some late free throw chances to keep the lead and grab the win.

Marshall returns to the Cam Henderson Center on Tuesday, Nov. 20 at 1 p.m., against Bluefield State College for Faculty/Staff Appreciation Day.
