Marshall Men’s Basketball Falls At Maryland, 104-67

Williams scores career-high 21 points in loss.

COLLEGE PARK, Md. – Marshall men's basketball suffered its first loss of the season, 104-67, to the Maryland Terrapins at the Xfinity Center Friday (Nov. 23) in College Park, Md.

The Herd fell to 4-1 with loss and Maryland is now 6-0.

"They (Maryland) played extremely well," fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "They punched us in the mouth and we didn't get back up. Toward the end of the half Jannson Williams just scored to cut it to 10. Then Taevion stole the ball wasn't aggressive, the ball got stolen and they made it 12. Then we made that play, whatever my player was thinking, and went down 15. We never got off that. Can't do that against a good ball club."

Sophomore forward Jannson Williams had a superb night from the field going 9 for 11, including 6 for 7 from beyond the arc, for 21 points. Williams also had a season-high three blocks to go with five rebounds.

"He (Jannson) was ready and stayed within our system," D'Antoni said. "He was playing our stuff and he worked for it."

Senior guard C.J. Burks and freshman guard Taevion Kinsey each collected 10 points. Burks had four steals, three rebounds and two assists, while Kinsey had a pair of takeaways.

Maryland had all five of their starters with 10 or more points led by 26 from Anthony Cowan, who went 10 of 15 from the field. Bruno Fernando added a double-double with 18 points and 16 boards.

The first 10 minutes of the game saw Maryland and Marshall go back-and-forth. Senior guard Jon Elmore surpassed Walt Walowac for third all-time in points in program history on a three-pointer with 15:12 on the clock.

The Herd took its largest lead of four, 19-15, on a three-pointer by sophomore forward Darius George at 11:48 mark in the first half.

Marshall trailed by two with just under 6:30 left in the opening half, but MAryland went on a 19-6 run to end the half.

Burks made all four of Marshall's free-throw attempts in first-half as the Terps went to the line for 17 attempts making 15 as the Herd trailed 53-38 at halftime.

The Terrapins extended their lead to as high as 44 in the second-half. Maryland shot 60 percent from the field in the final half to Marshall's 32.4 percent.

"We have to play the next game," D'Antoni said. "There's no magic to it. We have to practice. We have to get better. I can't go in there hit a wand and we're better. We have to keep playing and we'll get better from the mistakes we made."
