Men’s Basketball Survives Nail-Biter at Akron, 75-74

Herd win for first time at Akron since March 1, 2002.

AKRON, Ohio – Herd men's basketball survives a last-second shot attempt by the Akron Zips to pull out a 75-74 win at the James A. Rhodes Arena Saturday (Dec. 15) in Akron. Marshall had dropped its previous six contests at the JAR.
"It's very difficult, especially here," fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni said about the win at Akron. "They're a very athletic team. I'm happy for our kids. We grinded it out."
The Herd moves to 7-4 with the road win and drops Akron to a 6-4 record.
In the second half, the Herd maintained its lead through the opening 10 minutes, but Akron went on a 10-4 run and took a one-point advantage with 8:29 left in the game. Marshall regained the lead on its next possession with a dunk by sophomore Darius George.
The Herd was up by six with 2:37 left in the game, but the Zips closed the lead to one in just over one minute of game time. As both teams were unable to score, a ball went out of bounds with 1.1 seconds off the Herd under the Akron basket.
Akron's Loren Crist Jackson, who scored a game-high 26 points, threw up an off balance three that went wide off the rim as Marshall survived the late push.
"I thought I was looking at the Toledo again," D'Antoni said. "We got a little more pressure and he was falling away from the shot. This was a tough win."
The first half saw both teams shoot well from beyond the arc with each team making 50 percent of its shots from deep, Marshall 9 of 18 and Akron 6 of 12. However, after making 5 of 6 to from deep to start the game, the Zips made just 1 of 6 the rest of the opening half as the Herd led 42-36.
Senior guard Jon Elmore led the way for the Herd with 19 points. Elmore grabbed eight rebounds and dished out six assists in the road victory. His double-figure scoring effort was the 100th of his career.
Senior guard C.J. Burks followed Elmore's 19 with 13 of his own in the contest. Burks added seven boards and two assists to his line against the Zips.
Freshman guard Taevion Kinsey scored in double-figures with 10 points on 4 of 6 shooting from the field, including making his lone three-point attempt. He also had three rebounds in the game.
Sophomore forward Jannson Williams and sophomore guard Jarrod West each had nine points with three makes each from beyond the arc.
Marshall finished the game 27 of 63 from the field (42.9 percent), including 12 of 16 from beyond the arc (46.2). The Herd were 9 of 9 from the free-throw line.
