Men’s Basketball Ends 2018 with Loss at No. 4 Virginia

Trio of Marshall players score in double-figures

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va.– Marshall men's basketball falls at No. 4 Virginia, 100-64, on New Year's Eve.
"They played and shot the ball really well," Marshall fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "We started being a little more aggressive in the second half, but we're soft. We don't make the plays you have to make."
The Herd moves to 7-6 with the loss and the Cavaliers go to 12-0 on the season.
Senior guard Jon Elmore led Marshall with 14 points and three assists, going seven of nine from the free-throw line. Senior guard C.J. Burks reached double-figures with 11 points on a four of 11 day from the field while grabbing four rebounds.
Senior guard Rondale Watson rounded out a trio of Herd players in double-figures with 10 points while going three of seven from the field. Watson also made four of his five attempts from the charity stripe.
Sophomore forward Mikel Beyers led Marshall with five rebounds, while sophomore forward Jannson Williams had a team-high three blocks and Elmore had four steals.
The Herd answered the Cavaliers' makes in the opening minutes when sophomore forward Jannson Williams hit a three and sophomore guard Jarrod West made a jumper to tie the game at 5-5 at the 17:33 mark.
UVA kept the Herd at bay the rest of half as Marshall was outscored 45-20 after West's jumper. The Herd trailed 50-25 at halftime, making nine of its 27 attempts from the field and going three of 11 from beyond the arc.
The Cavaliers shot 56.7 percent from the field in the first half and made 50 percent of their three-point attempts.
Virginia started the second half on a 10-0 run to push it lead to 60-25 as it maintained a 30-point lead the rest of the way.
Marshall had more steals than Virginia, 11-7, and forced the Cavaliers into more turnovers, 13-16, than the Herd committed.
The Cavaliers had four in double-figure scoring led by Kyle Guy with 30 points. Guy made 10 of his 14 shots, including seven of nine from beyond the arc.
Postgame Notes
- Burks tallied his 13th game of 10 or more points this season, while Elmore scored 10 or more points for the 101st time of his career.
- Elmore's four steals tied a season-high set at the home opener against Hofstra.
- Freshman Taevion Kinsey scored eight points while making all four of his attempts from the field.
