NORFOLK, Va.– Herd men's basketball hands Old Dominion its first home loss of the season, 70-67, Thursday (Jan. 3) with a near last-second shot to start Conference USA action with a road win.

The win moves Marshall's overall record to 8-6 as ODU moves to 10-4 with the loss in a game that saw 17 lead changes and the score tied 12 times.

"We started good moving the ball and cracking through," fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni said. "This games over and we have to stay confident no matter what happens good or bad. We're going to Charlotte and they're waiting on us. We're a marked team."

44 seconds left on clock and Marshall up by two. ODU's B.J. Stith missed a pair of shots, but the Monarchs grabbed a pair of offensive boards with Aaron Carver putting back the second one to tie the game at 67-67 with 23 seconds left.

Senior guard C.J. Burks held the ball until coach D'Antoni told him to move with 10 ticks remaining. He passed the rock to senior guard Jon Elmore who dished it to sophomore guard Jarrod West in the left corner who knocked home a three to put the Herd up 70-67 with a second and some change on the clock. ODU's Xavier Green put a three at the buzzer, but the effort was no good as Marshall picked up the victory.

"This is what Conference USA basketball is about. That was a dog fight," West said. "Jon (Elmore) made a great pass and I knocked it down with confidence."

West finished the game with 12 points on a four of five shooting night from beyond the arc. He also brought down four rebounds in the contest.

Elmore finished the game with a team-high 20 points and a game-high 10 assists for his first double-double of the season. Elmore moved into second place in assists in program and C-USA history with his 10 assists. The senior added four rebounds and a pair of takeaways to his stat line.

Freshman guard Taevion Kinsey tallied 13 points on a five of six night from the field, making two of his three attempts from beyond the arc and grabbing seven rebounds. Kinsey also rejected three shots, had three helpers and a steal in the win.

Sophomore forward Jannson Williams brought up the rear of four Herd players with 10 or points with 10 on the button. Williams shot 50 percent from the field and recorded a pair of rebounds and blocks in the contest.

ODU started the game on a 6-0 run and pushed its lead to as much as seven points at the halfway point of the first-half.

However, the Herd Chipped away at the Monarch lead with a 9-0 run, with a pair of threes by West and a triple by sophomore forward Mikel Beyers to take its first lead, 22-20, with 9:30 left in the opening frame. Marshall never trailed the rest of half.

The Herd shot 14 of 30 from field in the first half, including seven of 17 from beyond the arc, while the Monarchs had 14 makes on 31 attempts with just one made three.

Stith led all players with 27 points by making nine of his 19 shots from the field.
