Beyers Blocks Final Shot to Seal Men’s Basketball Road Win at Charlotte

Burks scored a team-high 25 points in the win

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – Sophomore forward Mikel Beyers blocked the final shot of the game to give Herd men's basketball the 85-84 road win over Charlotte Saturday afternoon.
 
The Herd moves to 9-6 overall and 2-0 in Conference USA play, while Charlotte falls to 3-10 and 0-2 in conference action.
 
Senior guard C.J. Burks scored a team-leading 25 points on a 9-of-16 shooting day from the field, including 6-of-9 from beyond the arc. Burks also had four helpers and four boards in the win.
 
Senior guard Jon Elmore added 16 to go with a team-high five assists and three boards on his stat line.
 
Freshman guard Taevion Kinsey tied his career-high with 14 points on a 50 percent shooting day from the field. Kinsey made 6-of-7 from the line and tied for the team-high in steals with two.
 
Sophomore forward Jannson Williams grabbed a team-high six rebounds to go with 13 points.
 
Marshall pushed the pace early in the first-half of play. After a couple of 7-0 runs, the Herd eventually took its largest lead of the half at 11 points, 34-23 on an Elmore layup with at the 7:28 mark.
 
Charlotte battled back by putting up three 5-0 runs with under five minutes to go as Marshall led 46-42 at halftime.
 
Burks had 17 points while going 6-for-9 from the field, burying 5-of-6 shots from downtown, in the first-half.
 
The 49ers had a 11-4 foul disparity in the opening as they attempted 15 free-throws and made 12 to the Herd's 5-for-5 from the charity stripe in the opening half.
 
Charlotte took its first lead of the game, 53-52, on a Bo Blight three-pointer at the 17:04 mark of the second-half and grabbed its largest lead of three 32 seconds later.
 
Marshall quickly regained the lead with a 6-0 run on a Williams three-pointer and three made free-throw attempts by sophomore Darius George with 13:55 remaining in the game.
 
Both teams battled the rest of the way as Marshall led until Jon Davis made a pair of free-throws to give the 49ers an 84-83 lead with 47 ticks remaining.
 
Burks went down and made a layup 16 seconds later to take back the lead at 85-84.
 
After a missed shot and rebound by Charlotte, the 49ers grabbed the rebound and called a timeout with 1.5 seconds on the clock. Davis took a three, but Beyers rejected it. 
 
Postgame Notes
- The win marks the 82nd of fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni's career.
- Burks collected his fifth game of 20 or more of the season and first since Dec. 5 at Duquesne.
- Kinsey gathered his fifth double-figure scoring game of the season, while Elmore collected his 13th such effort in 15 games this season.
- Williams' effort of 10 or more points was the seventh of the season for the sophomore.
- Tonight was the seventh game for the Herd to have at least four players in double-figure scoring.
- Tonight was the Herd's first win of the season when giving up 80 or more points.

The Herd return home for its first home game in 32 days to take on Western Kentucky Saturday (Jan. 12) night at the Cam Henderson Center.
