ANNAPOLIS, Md. - Wins at each of the top four singles positions propelled the Marshall women's tennis team to its first road win of the season Saturday, defeating the Navy Midshipmen, 5-2, at the Tose Family Tennis Center at the Brigade Sports Complex.

"Overall, this was a great team effort to defeat a team that had won eight straight matches," head coach John Mercer said. "It was a great team effort to come back to win the doubles point after being down a break at both the No. 1 and No. 2 spots."

Marshall rallied to win the opening point of the match, winning the final two doubles matches to take the all-important doubles point. After Brooke Lashway and Ana Marhuenda fell in a tightly contested match at the No. 3 spot, 6-4, Maddie Silver and Stephanie Smith defeated Navy's Amanda Keller and Kaylah Hodge in a tiebreaker, 7-6(4). Anna Smith and Marija Bogicevic clinched the doubles point with a 7-6(5) win over Claudia Mackenzie and Emily Louie-Meadors.

After Navy evened the score with Josie Rogers' 6-0, 6-2 win over Lashway at the No. 5 spot, the Herd rattled off four consecutive singles wins to clinch the overall match. Anna Smith started the rally with her second straight win, a 6-0, 6-1 win over Navy's Carlee Conway. Bogicevic followed suit with her second straight win, 6-3, 6-0, over Ansofi Wreder. Silver rallied after dropping her first set to Louie-Meadors to win in three sets, 1-6, 6-3, 6-3. Stephanie Smith defeated Keller in three sets, 7-5, 5-7, 6-1, for Marshall's fifth point of the match. In the sixth singles match, Marhuenda fell in a third set tiebreaker to Hodge, 6-7(5), 7-5, 1-0 (10-8).

"I want to thank Navy for inviting us to play this match," Mercer said. "It was great for the team to come to Annapolis."

Marshall continues its four-match road trip Sunday with a match at Maryland. First serve is set for noon from the JTCC at the College Park Tennis Club.
