Weiss Shoots Under Par in Round One of Furman Intercollegiate

GREENVILLE, S.C. - Senior golfer Alex Weiss led the Marshall Thundering Herd's men's golf team with six birdies for a final score of 1-under-par 71 in the first round of the Furman Intercollegiate.
"Alex played very solid today," head coach Matt Grobe said. "He finished with two birdies on his final four holes to get in at 1-under. As a team, we played okay. We are a lot better than we are scoring right now. We are looking forward to getting back out there tomorrow and improving on today's round"
Weiss excelled on Par 5s, as he finished the first round averaging 4.25 on them and a final score of 3-under. Overall, his six birdies led all participants, while he made nine pars. Weiss birdied on two of his final four holes and made two pars to finish the day in a tie for 12th place.
Overall, the Herd is in a tie for 13th place after shooting 14-over 302 through 18 holes. Finishing behind Weiss were Will Straub, who had a 4-over 76 for to him for 61st place, and Thomas Frazier, who shot a 5-over 77 to tie him at 72nd.
Among the individuals, there is a four-way tie for first place with a score of 3-under, while 20 golfers out of 123 participants are shooting under par. No. 10 South Carolina-Aiken leads all of the teams, wile No. 28 North Florida trails by three strokes.
