BLACKSBURG, VA-The Thundering Herd baseball team fell to Virginia Tech Tuesday 11-3 at English Field. Marshall kept pace with the Hokies early, but a three-run homer and grand slam was too much for the Herd to overcome.

Marshall moved to 14-14 (4-8 C-USA) on the season. Virginia Tech now stands at 14-17 (6-9 ACC).

All three of Marshall's runs came off of solo home runs by right fielder Shane Hanon, second baseman Peter Hutzal, and center fielder Andrew Zban. Hanon also had a team-high two hits for the Herd.

Freshman reliever Christian Simon picked up the loss to move to 1-1 on the season. Simon pitched 2/3 innings allowing five hits, four runs (four earned), and walking none with no strikeouts. Virginia Tech starting pitcher Dylan Hall picked up his third win of the season to move to 3-2. Hall pitched seven innings allowing five hits, three runs (three earned), and struck out six with no walks.

The Herd jumped out to an early on a solo shot by Hanon over the right field wall for the 1-0 lead.

Virginia Tech answered with a run of their own to tie it at one in the bottom of the first.

Marshall once again took the lead on a solo homer, this time off the bat of Hutzal for the 2-0 lead, but once again the Hokies answered right back in the bottom of the innings to tie it at 2-2.

The Herd got its third homer in as many innings when Zban was able to also homer over the right field wall for the 3-2 lead.

The Hokies tied it back up in the fourth inning with a run, before a three-run home run and a solo homer back to back in the bottom of the fifth opened up a 7-3 lead.

A grand slam in the bottom of the seventh put the game out of reach for The Herd as it fell 11-3.

Marshall finished the game with three runs off of six hits with no errors. The Hokies had 11 runs off 14 hits with no errors.

Up next the Herd is back in Charleston for a rematch with Virginia Tech Wednesday at 6 p.m. before traveling to Bowling Green to take on Western Kentucky this weekend in a C-USA series.
