HERD UNDONE EARLY BY SANDLIN AND SOUTHERN MISS

BECKLEY, W.Va.-The Thundering Herd baseball team fell 10-2 to Southern Miss Thursday in the opening game of the team's final series of 2018. Marshall struggled with USM ace Nick Sandlin, who allowed just two runs through eight innings.
The loss moves Marshall to 19-29 (7-19 C-USA) on the season. Southern Miss improved to 37-15 (21-6 C-USA) and claimed the C-USA regular season championship for the second year in a row.
Geordon Blanton was the most effective bat for The Herd with a team-high two hits and one run. Erik Rodriguez and Raul Cabrera batted in Marshall's only two runs on the day.
Starting pitcher Ryan Falls picked up the loss to move to 0-2 on the season. The Cleveland native pitched two innings allowing seven hits, seven runs (seven earned), and walking one with one strikeout. Sandlin remained undefeated this season improving to 8-0. The starter pitched eight innings allowing seven hits, two runs (two earned), while striking out eight batters with no walks.
Southern Miss jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first inning, before a five run second gave the team a 7-0 lead.
Marshall responded in the bottom of the second with Rodriguez and Cabrera's RBIs that scored Blanton and Andrew Zban to make it a 7-2 game.
The Golden Eagles added a run in the fourth, fifth, and ninth innings to walk away with the 10-2 victory.
Marshall finished the game with two runs off of seven hits with no errors. Southern Miss had 10 runs off 13 hits with no errors.
Up next The Herd and Golden Eagles meet again Friday at 2 p.m. in a game that had to be moved up from its original scheduled time due to weather.
