Adams joins team as throwers coach
HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall track and field head coach Jeff Small announced Monday the hiring of Matt Adams as assistant coach for throwing events.
Adams joins the Thundering Herd having spent 11 years coaching collegiately, including the past three seasons at Central Michigan University.
"I am excited to join coach Small and Marshall track and field," Adams said. "I'm really looking forward to working with the athletes to help develop, strengthen, and build on an already great foundation of throwers we have here. Anytime you can step into a situation where there is great experience already, it is just that much easier to get moving. It is a great atmosphere here and I am excited to get started."
In his three seasons in charge of throwers with the Chippewas, Adams coached nine NCAA East Preliminary Championship qualifiers in 19 different events. Under his tutelage, Central Michigan throwers broke two school records, and eight freshman records were broken.
Prior to his time at Central Michigan, he spent four years as assistant coach at Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), coaching three throwers to NAIA National Championships. His throwers set 28 school and 17 conference records, and 19 athletes earned All-American honors.
Adams was a student-athlete himself at Oregon, where he qualified for the NCAA West Preliminary Championships in 2005 in the javelin. Prior to his time at Oregon, he was a four-time National Junior College Athletics Association All-American in the javelin and the discus at Glendale (Ariz.) Community College.
In addition to an associate's degree from Glendale Community College and a bachelor's of science in sociology from Oregon, Adams holds a master's of education from William Woods University, which he earned in 2012. Adams also holds multiple coaching certifications through USA Track & Field and the United States Track Field & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association.
"We're super excited to have Matt join our program," head coach Jeff Small said. "He brings a great résumé and we are very excited to see him work with our great throwers we have and in the years to come we're excited to see who he brings in to compete."
Adams and his wife, Emily, compete in Highland Games, athletic events centered around Scottish culture and throwing of heavy objects such as the caber toss, stone put, and Scottish hammer throw.
Adams replaces Paul Barrett, who came out of retirement to serve as an interim assistant coach for throwing events in the 2018 season.
"I want to thank Paul Barrett for the great job he did on an interim basis to not only help our girls get through that process and help them succeed," Small said.
