Debell with a match-high 25 kills
BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Marshall volleyball team fell in the first match of the BGSU Invitational to the host team Bowling Green (27-29, 27-25, 22-25, 22-25) in four sets Thursday night at the Stroh Center. Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell led the match with 25 kills.
The Thundering Herd is now 5-7 and the Falcons improve to 4-7.
"Got beat tonight by a good team," Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "They are the defending (Mid-American Conference) champs and we were playing on their floor tonight. We had opportunities tonight and we need to be better prepared as a team and staff when those opportunities come.
"We were always fighting from behind and that starts to wear you out."
The first set was a back-and-forth affair as the score was tied 13 times and the lead changed hands four times. The Falcons had several chances to close out the set, but the Herd kept fighting back and forced it to a 29-27 final.
In the second set, Marshall fell behind 5-1 and then fought back to take the lead at 12-11. Debell came alive in the second set with nine of her kills. The Herd fell behind again at 16-15, tied the set at 20-20 and then came back again to tie it again at 24-24. Two-straight kills by Debell closed out the set and tied the match at 1-1.
"When we grabbed the lead at 12-11, we let down and kept fighting from behind," coach Jacobs said. "I love the fight and the spirit with this team but when we grab the momentum we need to keep going and not let up.
"Got to figure out how to play with the lead."
The Herd played come back again in the third set. Marshall powered its way to tie the set at 8-8 after trailing 5-1. The Falcons pulled away again at 21-14 but the Herd put up another big rally and pulled within two at 22-20 and again at 23-21. Bowling Green finished out the set and took the lead, 2-1.
The fourth set was another back-and-forth battle with ten ties and three lead changes. Bowling Green built out a five-point lead at 22-17, but the Herd kept up the fight and got back within one at 22-21. The Falcons finally took the set, 25-22, and the match, 3-1.
"Ciara had a big night," coach Jacobs said. "She struggled a bit in the first set but calmed down and had a great night."
Junior Amber Weber had another stellar night with 35 digs.
"Amber had a huge night defensively and played hard," coach Jacobs said. "She played incredibly well."
Freshman Gabrielle Coulter led the Herd with 49 assists. Senior Shelby Coulter chipped in with 11 kills and freshman Joelle Coulter added nine with two solo blocks.
"I am really pumped up by what (the players) are starting to get," coach Jacobs added. "A lot of the small things are beginning to come together. That was a veteran squad tonight and we have to find a way to keep our spirits up."
Marshall returns to the court at the Stroh Center on Friday at 4 p.m. against Nicholls State. The Herd plays a final match of the BGSU Invitational against IUPUI on Saturday at 2 p.m.
