BOWLING GREEN, Ohio – The Marshall volleyball team grabbed a three-set sweep (25-11, 26-24, 25-20) over the Nicholls State Colonels, Friday evening from the Stroh Center.
The Thundering Herd improves to 6-7 and the Colonels fall to 2-10.
Redshirt sophomore Ciara Debell led the Herd again in kills with 16. Senior Lauren Mattmuller added 10. Sophomore Destiny Leon had seven kills and senior Shelby Conley added six. Freshman Gabrielle Coulter led with 27 assists and added 12 digs. Junior Amber Weber led all players with 25 digs.
"We came out on fire in set one and it was a great feeling after the tough loss last night," Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "Last night's unforced errors plagued us and to only have two in the first was great to see."
Marshall dominated the first set. After the Herd opened up a 10-3 lead, the closest the Colonels came was six points at 13-7. Marshall then turned in a 6-0 run and stayed up by double-digits for the rest of the set. Mattmuller led the team with five kills. Coulter had eight assists and Weber led in set one with six digs.
"I am most proud of how set two closed out," coach Jacobs said. "Nicholls was playing really well and things were going their way and to come from two set points down to win was very rewarding. Our players just don't quit and Ciara had three big kills down the stretch to close it out."
The Thundering Herd had to hold off a battling Nicholls State squad as the set was tied six times and had four lead changes until Marshall took the lead at 8-7. The Herd held the lead until the Colonels fought back and tied the second set at 21-21, and then took the lead at 22-21. Marshall stayed tough and tied the set back up at 24-24 on a kill by Debell. A Nicholls State attack error and then another kill by Debell got the win for the Herd.
"In set three, things were close early but we were able to grab a lead and to see us play with the lead the rest of the way," coach Jacobs said. "Even with Nicholls putting pressure on us was a nice sign to show our team we can get a lead and keep it."
The beginning of the third set was another back-and-forth battle as Nicholls State attempted to hold on and avoid the sweep. Marshall took the lead back at 7-6 and then went on a 4-0 run to extend the lead to five. The Herd maintained at least a three-point lead throughout the remainder of the contest. Debell ended the match with her 16th kill.
Coach Jacobs had some glowing words about his players following the sweep.
"Amber Weber was just awesome again tonight," coach Jacobs said. "It was like the five zone just didn't exist. She was everywhere. Amber's confidence is growing and it's great to see her playing at such a high level.
"Ciara was just cruising through the first two sets with only one error, but I have to say I was very impressed with the way she played through some errors in set three to have a few very big kills late to finish the match.
"Gabby did a nice job distributing the ball and our middles really played great. Destiny and Lolo (Mattmuller) combining for 17 kills and a 59 percent kill rate is just off the charts."
Marshall finishes off its trip to the BGSU Invitational on Saturday with a 2 p.m. match against the IUPUI Jaguars. The match will be live streamed.
