HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's soccer team fell to the Florida Atlantic Owls in the Conference USA opener, 2-1, Friday night at Hoops Family Field.
The Thundering Herd is now 2-4-2 and 0-1-0 in C-USA play. FAU improves to 3-6 and 1-0 in C-USA action.
"We looked a little disconnected in the first half," Herd head coach Kevin Long said. "Second half we came out motivated and they played together with a little fire in them. Marah's goal in the second half really put some motivation in them.
"I think the team we saw in the second half, despite the mistakes from the first, with the energy and drive is the type of team that will have success this year."
Florida Atlantic got on the scoreboard first with a goal in the 19th minute. The Owls increased the lead to 2-0 by an own goal on the Herd off a corner kick in the 31st minute.
Marshall got on the board as junior Marah Abu-Tayeh knocked in a pass from her sister Farah Abu-Tayeh just three minutes and 37 seconds into the second half. The Herd had some scoring opportunities and held possession for most of the half, but just couldn't hit the equalizer.
"We have a lot of young and inexperienced players, playing major minutes right now," coach Long said. "So they are learning their way through it and we need them to learn quickly. That is what the non-conference schedule is for, but they got their first taste of conference against a really good FAU team that is well balanced."
Marshall returns to the pitch at UTEP on Thursday Sept. 20. Kickoff is set for 9 p.m. ET.
