Women’s Soccer Heads out West for Match with the Miners

El Paso, Texas – The Marshall women's soccer team travels out to El Paso, Texas, to take on the UTEP Miners in Conference USA action. The match is set for Thursday at 9 p.m. eastern.

The Thundering Herd enters the match with a record of 2-4-2 and 0-1-0 in C-USA play. The Miners come in at 5-3-1 and 1-0-0 in conference action.
Marshall is looking to get back on the winning side after a 2-2 draw at Gardner-Webb and then a 2-1 loss to Florida Atlantic on Friday. In the match with the Owls, junior Marah Abu-Tayeh scored her third goal of the season and put her into a tie with her twin sister Farah Abu-Tayeh for the team lead. Farah also has three assists including two on goals by Marah. Redshirt junior Jayne Lawman is second with two goals.
Junior keeper Megan Bonelli has played all 753 minutes in the net this season. She has recorded 37 saves and has 156 in her career, 13 behind Ashleigh Woods (2001-04) for fourth all-time in program history. Senior Ashley Seltzer, junior Metzli Gonzalez and sophomore Annie Springer have also played every minute this year.
The Miners are coming off a 2-0 win over FIU on Sunday. UTEP has outscored its opponents 16-9 in 2018. Lauren Crenshaw leads the team with four goals and is 3-for-3 this season on penalty kicks. April Pate, Vic Bohdan, Jojo Ngongo and Anna Jimerson have all scored two goals each.
Alyssa Palacios has been the lone player in the net for the Miners and has a 0.95 goals against average. Palacios has recorded 38 saves and has three shutouts. The shutouts have all come in three out of the past four matches. UTEP has committed 20 more fouls (105-85) than its opposition and has garnered six yellow cards.
UTEP leads the all-time series with Marshall, 6-3-2. The Miners took the last match in 2017 in El Paso, 2-0. The Herd last defeated UTEP in 2016 with a 1-0 victory at Hoops Family Field.
Marshall returns to Hoops Family Field on Sunday, Sept. 23 at 1 p.m., against the FIU Panthers.
