First weekly C-USA award for Weber and Coulter

IRVING, Texas – The Marshall volleyball teamed grabbed two weekly Conference USA honors on Monday, the league office announced. Junior Amber Weber was named Defensive Player of the Week and freshman Gabrielle Coulter earned Freshman of the Week.

It is the first weekly honor for both players.

"Amber had a pretty special weekend [BGSU Invitational] and certainly deserved the all-tournament accolade," Herd head coach Mitch Jacobs said. "She put in a weekend performance that I'm not sure I've seen from one of our liberos. I made a point in the locker room after the match, we had the libero of the year in C-USA just two years ago, and I don't remember Allie [Kellerman] digging over eight balls a set over a three-match stretch. Pretty incredible."

At the BGSU Invitational, Weber recorded 91 kills over three matches and was named to the all-tournament team. In the four-set loss to Bowling Green, the defending MAC Regular Season Champs, Weber recorded 35 digs and helped to keep the Herd in the match with key digs coming off hard Falcon attacks. In the sweep over Nicholls State, Weber almost single-handedly neutralized her opponents attack. With 25 more digs, the junior libero kept getting the ball back to her offensive playmakers. The Ocala, Fla., native did it again with 31 more digs in the four-set win over IUPUI. Weber has been instrumental in directing her teammates around the floor.

"Gabby has been getting better every weekend," coach Jacobs said of his freshman setter. "It's great to see these two get honored and represent the team."

Coulter keeps putting her teammates into great positions to come through with points for the Herd. The freshman setter recorded 128 more assists during the three-match BGSU Invitational. She recorded 49 assists during the back-and-forth battle with Bowling Green and added two kills and 14 digs. Coulter added 27 more assists in the sweep of Nicholls State. Against IUPUI in the tournament finale, Coulter led the Herd once again with 52 assists in setting up Marshall for the four-set win. The Bradenton, Fla., native added six kills and 12 digs in a great, all-around performance.

Weber leads the team with 273 digs for the year and is averaging 5.25 digs per set. Coulter leads the Herd with 455 assists and is averaging 9.89 assists per set.

Marshall returns to the court on Friday, Sept. 21 at 6 p.m., in the Cam Henderson Center as the Charlotte 49ers come to town for the Conference USA opener.
