DAYTON, Ohio – The Marshall men's soccer team is back on the pitch Monday against the Dayton Flyers in the final match of the Dayton Classic. Kickoff from Baujan Field is set for 7 p.m.

The Thundering Herd is 2-1-0 while the Flyers enter the match at 2-0-1. The will be broadcast on ESPN Plus.

"Another tough match up for us," Herd head coach Chris Grassie said. "Dayton will be the best team we have played so far this season, and it's a great opportunity for us to get the result. In the last match, we did a good job of playing when we could and winning our battles when we couldn't, and Dayton will be just the same.

We have to make sure that we are strong and organized, and that we take our chances when we create them. We know in every match we've played, we've created good chances, and now is the time to start putting them away."

Monday will be the fifth meeting all-time between the two programs. Dayton leads the series 4-0, and the teams have not met since 2008.

Marshall bounced back after a tough loss at home to Oakland with a 1-0 win over Ohio State, the first match of the Dayton Classic, this past Friday. Freshman Kelan Swales scored his first goal of the season when he knocked in a pass from junior Carlos Diaz-Salcedo just one minute and 53 seconds into the contest. Redshirt junior keeper Paulo Pita made five saves in the shutout victory over the Buckeyes.

Four different players have scored a goal for the Herd this season as Swales joined Jonas Westmeyer, Gianni Bouzoukis and JP Rylah in the scoring column. All four are newcomers this season, and Westmeyer also leads the team with two assists.

Pita, another newcomer, has played all 270 minutes in goal this season and has recorded 10 saves with just three goals allowed and two shutouts. Along with Pita, senior defender Chris Taibi is the only other Herd player to have not missed a single minute this season. Taibi has been very instrumental in leading the Marshall defense.

The Flyers have wins over Furman (1-0) and Milwaukee (2-0) to begin the 2018 season. Dayton played to a 2-2 draw against Hofstra in the season-opener. Redshirt senior Aidan Bean leads the team with two goals. Sophomore Trey Marchino and freshman Agustin Volker have one goal each. Junior Laurel Aug has two assists.

Junior Federico Barrios has been the lone player in the net for the Flyers with all 290 minutes played, nine saves and just two goals allowed in the tie with Hofstra.

Following the match at Dayton, Marshall returns to the friendly confines of Hoops Family for the Conference USA opener against the FIU Panthers. The contest is set for Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m.
