ATHENS, Ohio – The Marshall women's soccer team fell to the Ohio Bobcats, 3-1, on a hot Sunday afternoon from Chessa Field.
The Thundering Herd is now 1-3-1 and the Bobcats improve to 2-3-1.
"We came out of the gates a little sluggish today, again having to come from behind early," Herd head coach Kevin Long said. "Chasing the result cost our legs and late in the game, we just couldn't bend anymore. It is a great learning weekend for us and we now turn our attention to having a more successful weekend ahead."
The Bobcats started the scoring with a goal in the eighth minute by Jenni Santacaterina. Redshirt junior Jayne Lawman tied the match in the 30th minute with her first goal of the season on an assist from junior Farah Abu-Tayeh. Abu-Tayeh now leads the team with two assists. The teams battled throughout the remaining 15 minutes of the half. Ohio had several shot opportunities but could not capitalize as junior keeper Megan Bonelli and the defense continued to make the plays.
The Marshall defense continued to shut down a lot of scoring opportunities for Ohio in the second half until a goal in the 80th minute broke the 1-1 tie. The Bobcats put the match away with its third goal in the 85th minute.
Bonelli recorded 10 saves in the contest, her third career game with 10 or more saves.
Marshall continues its early season road-swing with two contests in the state of North Carolina. The Herd returns to the pitch on Friday, Sept. 7 at 7 p.m., at High Point. Then Marshall travels to Boiling Springs, N.C., to play at Gardner-Webb on Sunday, Sept. 9.
