HUNTINGTON, W.Va.—Marshall women's soccer scored three unanswered goals in the second half to defeat FIU 3-2 on a rainy Sunday afternoon at Hoops Family Field.
The Herd won its second consecutive Conference USA game to improve to 4-4-2 (2-1-0, C-USA) for the season. The Panthers dropped to 0-11-0 (0-3-0, C-USA).
"It wasn't pretty, which kind of matched the elements today," head coach Kevin Long said. "At halftime we were down and we thought we controlled most of the play and had some good chances, but we looked a little out of sync, a little tired. Maybe still feeling it from the UTEP win just the other day. But I thought they showed great resolve and persistence.
"After the first goal we scored, I felt there was a bit of change of momentum and it was much needed. We're happy to get the win, and ugly or not, we'll take it."
Despite going into halftime leading in shots on goal 3-1 and in corner kicks 6-1, the Herd trailed 1-0 at the break from a Panthers goal in the 18th minute. FIU doubled its lead, 2-0, just 42 seconds into the second half on a header from a free kick.
Junior Farah Abu-Tayeh got the Herd on the board when she finished a cross from her sister Marah Abu-Tayeh played on the touchline to the center of the 18-yard box. Her fourth goal of the season made the score 2-1.
In the 81st minute, senior Ashley Seltzer converted a penalty kick to equalize. Her shot from the penalty spot was placed in the lower right corner past the diving FIU keeper to level the score. It was Seltzer's second goal of the season.
F. Abu-Tayeh capped the comeback in the 84th minute. Molly Preston lifted a ball into the box from the right side which Abu-Tayeh was able to get her body on to deflect into the back of the net for her fifth goal of the season and the game winner.
Marshall outshot FIU 13-9 in the contest and 8-3 in shots on target. The Herd led the contest in corner kicks (10-2).
Freshman goalkeeper Lindsay Langley recorded one save in net for the Herd. Her sliding save in the 66th minute helped keep the game at the time a one goal deficit for Marshall. She improves to 2-0-0 this season.
"There's a different feeling in the team right now," Long said. "The UTEP game was very big for us, with a good opponent on the road, and in that physical battle I think they kind of found themselves. Today we showed it in the second half, I think they now know and believe a little more in themselves than they have in a little while. They have some good play under them and the results are showing."
The Herd hits the road for three consecutive Conference USA road contests beginning Friday, September 28 at Old Dominion. Kickoff is set for 7 p.m. from Norfolk, Virginia.
"What we've come to expect and love from Conference USA is the competitive nature," coach Long said. "Next week is two of our tougher games that you could play on the road with Charlotte and Old Dominion. There's not a second we can take our foot off the gas, but we're eager to see. We played two good teams this weekend and had two good results. Hopefully we can fix some things in training, especially on the back end, and see if we can come out swinging Friday night."
