Volleyball Falls in Three Sets to NIU

DeBell, Coulter and Mattmuller combine for 23 kills
TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Marshall volleyball dropped its second match of the day to Northern Illinois, 3-0 (25-18, 25-22, 25-21), Friday evening at Foster Auditorium.
"We just got outworked by Northern Illinois in every phase of the game," head coach Mitch Jacobs said.
The Herd (4-6) was led by Ciara DeBell, who had 10 kills and two blocks. Joelle Coulter added seven kills and 14 digs, while Lauren Mattmuller had six kills. Gabrielle Coulter tallied 26 assists and Amber Weber recorded 16 digs. Northern Illinois (2-7) was led by Meg Wolowicz with 14 kills. Jori Radtke added 11 kills and nine digs for the Huskies.
Northern Illinois opened the first set with a 7-1 run that the Herd never recovered from. Kills by Mattmuller and Isa Dostal and a pair of kills by DeBell cut NIU's lead to 18-16, but the Huskies scored the next four points and seven of the last nine to take the opening set, 25-18.
The Herd opened the second set on a 9-0 run, highlighted by three service aces by Weber. NIU used a 10-2 run to pull within a point, 11-10. After a pair of kills by Mattmuller extended Marshall's lead to 17-12, the Huskies went on an 8-2 run to take a 20-19 lead. NIU took five of the last six points to clinch the second set, 25-22, taking a 2-0 lead into the intermission.
The Herd and Huskies traded points in the early stages of the third set until a four-point run gave Marshall a 13-9 lead. NIU responded with a 7-2 run to take a 17-15 lead. A kill by DeBell cut the Herd's deficit to 20-19, but NIU took five of the last seven points to clinch the set, 25-21, and the match, 3-0.
The Herd wraps up play at the Hampton Inn Bama Bash Saturday at noon against (RV) Georgia Tech.
