Burks has Big Night in Men’s Basketball OT Loss at Louisiana Tech

RUSTON, La. – Despite a double-double by C.J. Burks, Herd men's basketball (12-8, 5-2 C-USA) fell to the Louisiana Tech Bulldogs (14-7, 4-4 C-USA), 89-80, in overtime Thursday night in Ruston.
Burks collected 29 points, including 20 in the second-half, to go with a career-high 12 rebounds for the first double-double of his career. The senior guard made 13 of 20 shots from the field to go with four assists on his stat line.
Down the stretch in the second-half, Burks scored four of the Herd's final seven points in regulation including giving Marshall its first lead since the 12:25 mark of the first-half on a layup with a mere 55 ticks left in the game as the score was 69-68.
After a Bulldog layup, sophomore Jannson Williams drained a three to give Marshall a two-point lead with 10 seconds remaining. The three marked the final points of an 11-point game for the forward.
LA Tech went down and tied the game, 72-72, with a layup. Jon Elmore's three-point attempt as time expired missed the mark as the two teams headed to overtime.
In overtime, the Herd were unable to grab the lead as the Bulldogs took the game.
Elmore collected a game-high eight assists in the loss and made one three-point attempt.
Taevion Kinsey scored 14 points, with 12 coming in the second-half, on a 7 of 9 night from the field. The freshman guard also tied for the team-high with Burks in steals with two, while Williams had a game-high three blocks.
NOTES:
-Elmore is now tied for the most made three-pointers in program history at 293 with Austin Loop and has 701 assists and is tied with Greg White for most in program history. White's record has stood since 1981.
- The loss marks just the third defeat when scoring at least 80 points this season.
- The Herd had three players with eight rebounds in the game.
- This is the first time since suffering defeats to Texas A&M and Virginia that Marshall has lost back-to-back games.
- Kinsey has scored 10 or more points in five of the last seven games.
- Burks is now 12th in program history in points with 1,602 for his career.
