Women’s Soccer Suffers Overtime Loss to UTSA

M. Abu-Tayeh extends point streak to five games

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall women's soccer (4-10-0, 2-4-0) rallied with a late goal to force overtime, but fell early in the extra period, 3-2, to UTSA on Sunday at Hoops Family Field.

"That's a tough result," Marshall head coach Kevin Long said after the loss. "I thought the team played good soccer. For the majority of the game, I thought we controlled it. UTSA did a great job on their counters. They were quick, aggressive and wanted it really badly. I think that is an issue of being too content with our team. For whatever reason, we scored, and that's a great goal out of the gate. Then there's a complacency and they came right back in and neutralized the energy to make it a game."

Marshall started the game with an early goal as Farah Abu-Tayeh put home a rebound from Marah Abu-Tayeh's shot to give it a 1-0 lead in the second minute.

It didn't take long for the Roadrunners to answer as Ellis Patterson scored in the fourth minute to tie the game 1-1.

After playing the next 85-plus minutes with no score from either side, Patterson struck at the 88:58 mark in the second half to give UTSA a 2-1 lead.

However, 21 seconds later Morgan White put home a pass from M. Abu-Tayeh to tie the game with 41 ticks on the clock and eventually force overtime.

Almost three minutes into overtime, Patterson struck a ball that was saved by Marshall goalkeeper Lindsay Langley, but the ball just squeaked by here as Abby Kassal put home the rebound.

The Herd outshot the Roadrunners 15-14 with each team placing seven shots on goal.

UTSA committed 12 fouls to Marshall getting called for four. The Herd didn't have a corner attempt as the Roadrunners had three corners.
