HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall Thundering Herd men's basketball team (1-1) fell to the Toledo Rockets (1-1) 96-70 on Sunday afternoon at the Cam Henderson Center.
"They (Toledo) were well coached," Marshall head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the loss. "They shot the tar out of it, especially early. It hurt us because it was our mistakes. We had opportunities to stay right with them. We had open shots and missed them. We missed a dunk. I think Beyers had three wide-open threes, who is considered our best shooter. They have to go down when you're playing a team that won 25 games and went to the NIT last year."
Junior guard Jarrod West and sophomore guard Taevion Kinsey each scored 20 points in the contest. West shot 9-for-15 from the field and added a game-high four steals, while Kinsey went 5-of-11 on the day, including 9-for-10 from the charity stripe.
Redshirt freshman forward Cam Brooks-Harris lead Marshall for the second consecutive game in rebounds with seven as Kinsey had a team-high three assists.
Brooks-Harris, redshirt junior forward Jannson Williams and freshman center Goran Miladinovic each rejected two shots.
Marshall kept the game close early on, but when the Rockets regained a two-point lead with 15:42 on the clock in the first half, Marshall would not be closer the rest of the way.
Toledo's lead reached double-figures, 23-12, seven and a half minutes into the game with its lead at halftime being 55-34.
The Rockets largest lead of the contest was points and the eventual margin of victory.
UT had five in double-figure scoring, led by a career-high 27 points from Spencer Littleson, who went 6-for-8 from beyond the arc. Dylan Alderson and Willie Jackson added double-doubles for Toledo as Alderson had 17 points and 10 rebounds, with Jackson adding 10 points and 10 rebounds.
NOTES
West has scored 20 points in back-to-back games for the first time in his career.
Kinsey's 20-point effort was the fourth such game of his career.
West's four steals moved him past Sidney Coles and Tamar Slay for sole possession of eighth most in program history with 144 career takeaways.
Williams' two blocks moved him into 10th all-time in program history with 145. He passed Tyler Wilkerson who had 143.
