HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team lost to the Morgan State Bears, 57-52, Thursday evening in the Cam Henderson Center.

The Thundering Herd falls to 3-2 and the Bears improve to 3-3.

Junior Taylor Pearson and redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks led the team in scoring with 13 each. Freshman Savannah Wheeler chipped in with 11. Pearson also led the team in rebounds with seven. Sophomore Kia Sivils had a season-high four steals.

Marshall struggled on offense shooting just 31.9 percent (15-of-47) from the field. The Herd hit 8-of-19 (42.1 percent) from three but missed 12 free throws (14-of-26).

The game began with Marshall jumping out to an 11-1 lead, but over the final 3:53 of the first the Bears fought back outscoring the Herd 11-3 as Morgan State turned up the defensive pressure.

The Herd got going again at the beginning of the second quarter and eventually got up to a five-point lead, 23-18, with just under five minutes left to the half. The Bears fired up the press defense again, forcing turnovers and went on an 8-0 run to take a three-point lead, 26-23. A long pass from senior Princess Clemons to freshman Paige Shy to break through the press led to a three by Shy. It was Shy's first collegiate three and tied the game with 1:40 left in the second. Neither team could break the tie before the halftime buzzer.

Marshall came back out from halftime and took the lead again. The Herd led by as much as eight, 37-29, with 4:44 left in the third. Again, Morgan State turned on the defensive pressure and began to rally taking the lead with two made free throws (38-37) with 2:20 left on the clock. Two free throws from junior Kristen Mayo with eight seconds left in the third broke the four minutes and 36 seconds scoring drought for the Herd. At the end of the quarter, Marshall trailed by one, 40-39.

Missed free throws hurt the Herd in fourth quarter with six misses from the line. Marshall had a chance after a technical foul against the Bears with 29 seconds left put Wheeler at the line. The freshman guard hit both free throws and the Herd trailed by one and had the ball. Marshall did not score for the remainder of the game and Morgan State hit all four free throw attempts.

The Herd had 19 turnovers in the contest, however due to the defensive play of Marshall, Morgan State was only able to score 18 points off the turnovers.

The Herd hits the road for its next contest on Sunday, Nov. 24 at 2 p.m. eastern, at the Evansville Purple Aces.
