No. 11 Men’s Soccer Set to Host WVU in Second Round of NCAA Tournament

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The 11th-ranked Marshall men's soccer team is back at home against the West Virginia Mountaineers in the second round of the NCAA Tournament. Kickoff from the sold-out Hoops Family Field is set for 2 p.m. on Sunday.
The Thundering Herd enters with an overall record of 15-2-3. The Mountaineers come in at 10-8-2.

Last Meeting: Sept. 15, 2004 in Morgantown – WVU won 2-1.
Marshall looks to continue its best season in program history in the NCAA Tournament. The Herd set a record for most wins in a season after earning its 15th while also marking another program-first. A Conference USA Tournament Championship. Marshall completed its double adding the tournament title victory on top of the C-USA Regular Season Championship and securing the No. 1 seed. The Herd defeated No. 4 seed Kentucky, 1-0, in the semi-final and then took down No. 2 seed Charlotte, 1-0, with a Golden Goal in the 103rd minute.
Junior Pedro Dolabella was able to sneak it past Charlotte's keeper with a header by the left post on a corner kick from senior Jonas Westmeyer. Dolabella's seventh goal of the season was the biggest of his career and resulted in him being honored as the C-USA Tournament Offensive MVP. Senior Carlos Diaz-Salcedo was named Defensive MVP and sophomore Vinicius Fernandes and redshirt sophomore Collin Mocyunas were also honored on the All-Tournament Team.
Marshall advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time in program history. During an NCAA Selection Show party on Monday, the Herd learned that it was ranked high enough to receive a first round bye and host a second round match. With West Virginia defeating Butler, 5-1, Thursday night, Marshall saw who the opponent for the second round match will be. The Herd and the Mountaineers will be meeting on the pitch for the first time in 15 years, or 5,548 days.
Marshall has outscored its opponents this season 44-15. The Herd has also outshot the competition, 255-201, and 117-81 in shots on goal. Redshirt freshman Milo Yosef remains the team leader in goals (11) and points (25). Junior Jamil Roberts leads in assists with 10 and is second with 22 points. Roberts is tied for fifth in the NCAA in assists and leads Conference USA. Dolabella is second on the team in goals and is third in points with 18. Ten different players have scored a goal this season for Marshall with nine of those players scoring two or more.
Redshirt senior keeper Paulo Pita has been a brick wall this year for the Herd as he has played all 1,875 minutes with just 15 goals allowed in 20 matches. Pita sports a 0.72 goals against average, good for 17th in the country. He has a .810 save percentage which leads the conference and is 14th in the nation. Pita's eight shutouts is second all-time for a single-season in program history.
Opponent
The West Virginia Mountaineers earned its way into the NCAA Tournament with three wins in the Mid-American Conference Tournament. The Mountaineers began with a 1-0 win over SIU-Edwardsville and then defeated Western Michigan, 3-2, to advance to the Championship Match. WVU came out victorious over Bowling Green, 1-0, to earn the MAC Title.
West Virginia went on the road to the Butler Bulldogs for its first round, NCAA match and came away with a 5-1 win. WVU scored first on a penalty kick in the third minute. Butler tied the match in the 21st minute, but it was all Mountaineers from there scoring the go-ahead goal in the 36th minute and adding three more goals in the second half. The five goals matched WVU's best scoring output of the season, a 5-2 win over then No. 15 Coastal Carolina back on Sept. 13.
Rodrigo Robles Grajera leads the team with nine goals and 21 points, and scored twice in the win over Butler. Andres Muriel Albino is second on the team in scoring with seven goals and 16 points. Luke McCormick is the leader in assists with nine. The Mountaineers have outscored the opposition 32-29 this season. WVU has also outshot its competition, 249-196, and is winning the shots on goal category, 106-89.
Steven Tekesky has been the mainstay in the net, playing all 1,846 minutes. Tekesky has allowed 29 goals, carries a 1.41 goals against average, tallied 58 saves and has a .667 save percentage. He has also earned six shutouts this season. Tekesky was named the MVP of the MAC Tournament.

It is survive and advance time as both teams will be looking to keep the season going. The winner of the match on Sunday will take on the winner of No. 6 Washington and Boston College. The Washington and Boston College match is set for 8 p.m. eastern time on Sunday.
