HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall women's basketball team had a dominant performance with an 85-41 win Wednesday night over Alderson Broaddus in the Cam Henderson Center.
The Thundering Herd improved to 4-3. The Battlers are 1-3.
"It was a good win," Herd head coach Tony Kemper said. "There is not a person in that room that is happy with the week we just had. I thought the press kind of sped (Alderson Broaddus) up, that's what I thought would happen and it did. That was to our advantage because we got some easy looks early.
"I know this team can get a lot better and that we can play much better than the way we have played lately."
Marshall featured balanced scoring as all 11 players that came in the game chipped in at least two points. Freshman Savannah Wheeler led all scorers with 13 and added a season-high six assists. Junior Taylor Pearson had 11 points and grabbed five boards. Sophomore Lorelei Roper, in her first action since suffering a knee injury back on March 2, scored 10 points and added five rebounds and two blocks. Roper finished 5-of-6 from the field.
Junior Dazha Congleton and freshmen Alexis Johnson and Paige Shy had nine points each. Congleton added six rebounds and two steals. Johnson hit her first career three-pointer right before the buzzer at the end of the third quarter. Shy led the Herd in rebounds with a season-high eight and added a great block on a fast-break, layup attempt in the second.
Redshirt senior Khadaijia Brooks grabbed six boards and continued her consecutive games streak with at least one rebound to 70-straight. Senior Ashley Saintigene tallied five blocks, all coming in the second half, and brought her season total up to 24. As a team, the Herd had 10 blocks. It is the second time this season that Marshall has hit double-digits in rejections.
Junior Kristen Mayo scored six points. Senior Princess Clemons had season-highs in points (eight) and assists (four). Junior Brianna Toney earned an opportunity to step to the line and buried both free throw attempts for her two points in the game.
The Herd also dominated on the glass with 56 rebounds to 37 for Alderson Broaddus. Ten players chipped in and eight tallied four boards or more.
Marshall's defense stifled the Battlers from the start. Alderson Broaddus scored the first basket of the game and then did not score again until the second. The Herd defense forced several tough shots as the Battlers hit on just 9.1 percent (1-of-11) from the field in the first quarter.
Over the whole game, Marshall held Alderson Broaddus to just 25 percent (17-of-68) from the field and 16.7 percent from three (3-of-18). The Battlers also struggled at the free throw line hitting just 4-of-13 (30.8 percent). The Herd defense held Alderson Broaddus to scoring in single digits in the first (two) and third (nine) quarters.
Marshall shot 52.9 percent (9-of-17) in the first quarter while putting up 22 points, and 61.1 percent (11-of-18) in the third quarter scoring 28 more. For the game, the Herd shot 46.4 percent (32-of-69) and drained 12 three-pointers.
Marshall returns to action on Tuesday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m., at Indiana State.
