SAN DIEGO – The Marshall softball team closed out opening weekend with a 7-4 victory over the Portland State Vikings, Sunday at the USD Tournament hosted by the University of San Diego. The Thundering Herd improves to 4-1 to begin the 2019 season.
Â
"I was really proud of our team's resilience today after a tough loss last night," head coach Megan Smith said. "Our offense and pitching continued to be outstanding and we made improvements on defense.
Â
"Overall I thought we had a solid weekend and our focus will be on cleaning up our defensive play this week before heading down to Conway (Coastal Carolina)."
Â
Marshall recorded eight hits with freshman Chloe Lee leading the way going 3-for-3 at the plate, one run, one RBI and nabbed two stolen bases. Sophomore Aly Harrell was walked two more times and finished the weekend with 11 total walks, two hit-by-pitches and an on base percentage of .773.
Â
Senior Abigail Tolbert got the start in the circle and pitched 4.2 innings, allowed four runs, two earned and struck out four in earning the win. Junior Kailee Williamson tossed the final 2.1 shutout innings, allowed just one hit and struck out one while picking up the save. Williamson finished the weekend with 0.00 ERA.
Â
The Herd got on the board first with three runs in the top of the second inning. With two outs, senior Hannah Giammarino was walked and then stole second. Fellow senior Hayden Ellis drove Giammarino in with a double down the left field line. Lee kept the inning going with an infield single and Ellis scored on the play as the third baseman threw it wide of first. Lee later scored on a single to left from sophomore Armani Brown.
Â
Marshall increased the lead to four runs in the third as freshman Rachel Pennington scored from third during a rundown with junior Sierra Huerta between first and second.
Â
The Vikings answered with two runs in the bottom of the third to cut the Herd lead down to two, 4-2.
Â
Marshall's offense kept on rolling with three more runs in the fifth. Sophomore Katie Adams led off getting plunked and then Huerta drew a walk. Both runners advanced the next 60 feet on a successful sacrifice bunt from junior Blakely Burch. Giammarino then stepped up and smacked a shot to deep center for a two RBI triple, the first triple of her Herd career for the transfer from Bowling Green. Two batters later, Giammarino crossed the plate as Lee legged out an infield single.
Â
Portland State scored two more runs in the bottom of the fifth cutting the deficit to three, but could not get any closer. In the bottom of the seventh, the Vikings put two runners on but a double play by Brown to Harrell ended the game and secured the win for Marshall.
Â
The Herd finished the weekend hitting .336 as a team, 47 hits and scored 32 runs. On the defensive side, Marshall allowed 17 runs but opponents hit just .187 against the Herd's pitchers. Williamson and Tolbert both tossed 17 innings each during the tournament. Tolbert earned two wins with nine strikeouts and Williamson had one win, one save, and 10 strikeouts. Senior Ali Burdette earned the other win after coming on in relief against Cal Poly.
Â
Marshall returns to the field Feb. 15-17, at the Battle at the Beach hosted by Coastal Carolina. The Herd will face Eastern Kentucky, Coastal Carolina, Presbyterian and Towson.
