Softball Splits in First Day of the Battle at the Beach

Marshall defeats EKU 5-2, and falls to Coastal Carolina 1-0

Game One Box Score (EKU)
Game Two Box Score (Coastal Carolina)

CONWAY, S.C. – The Marshall softball team took the first game 5-2 against EKU before falling 1-0 to Coastal Carolina on the first day of the Battle at the Beach, Friday afternoon.

Marshall is now 5-2.

"Tough game (Coastal Carolina) to lose," Herd head coach Megan Smith said. "I feel like we had opportunities to push a run across and just couldn't execute. Credit to them, they played a really good game and their pitcher threw a good game.

"Earlier in the day I felt like we had a complete team effort in that win. I think both pitchers (Tolbert and Williamson) were great today. Tolbert pitched extremely well in both games. One of the improvements we made today was our defense looked a lot better and that is a huge bright spot for us moving forward. But, after a tough game like that today we have to come back tomorrow and bounce back and be ready to compete."

Game One: Marshall 5, EKU 2
The Herd thundered its way to the win in the first game of the day with some explosive fireworks early and then late.

Sophomore Armani Brown led off the game with her first career double and then fellow classmate Aly Harrell hit one up the middle for a base hit that scored Brown. Marshall took the early lead 1-0.

Harrell, who had been walked more times than registering official at-bats this past weekend, belted a towering shot to center for a solo home run in the bottom of the third. It was her first of the season, 12th of her career, and gave the Herd a 2-0 lead.

EKU answered with a 2-run home run in the top of the fourth. Starting pitcher junior Kailee Williamson responded with back-to-back outs on just six pitches to get out of the inning with the game tied at 2-2.

The Marshall offense struggled in the fourth and fifth innings as the game remained tied. The bats sprang back to life in the bottom of the sixth inning with a couple of substitutions from the Herd bench. Junior Sierra Huerta drew a one-out walk and then freshman Mya Stevenson stepped up for a pinch hit. The freshman smashed a towering shot to left on a 2-2 count that gave the lead back to Marshall, 4-2. Senior Briana Daiss then stepped in for a pinch hit and drilled a laser-shot to left center for back-to-back homers.

It was the first back-to-back home runs for Marshall since Taylor McCord and Shaelynn Braxton teamed up at FIU on April 14, 2017.

Senior Abigail Tolbert entered the circle in the top of the fifth and proceeded to shut down the Colonels. Tolbert allowed just one base runner per frame over the final three innings and earned her third win of the season, 15th of her career.

Brown and Harrell both finished with two hits each. Harrell was walked again, but just once, and drew a walk in the first six games of this season.

Game Two: Coastal Carolina 1, Marshall 0
It was a pitching duel in the second game of the day for the Thundering Herd as Marshall managed just four hits and the Chanticleers recorded three. The Herd defense did not record an error.

Tolbert received the start and pitched the complete game, allowing just three hits and the one run. Her lone strikeout of the game in the sixth inning was the 100th of her career. Tolbert took the loss and is now 3-1 with a 1.88 ERA.

Coastal Carolina scored in the bottom of the second inning and held on through the rest of the game. Marshall moved a runner into scoring position in three separate innings but just could not find the timely hitting. Huerta recorded two hits including a double. Stevenson and Daiss had one hit each.

Marshall continues at the Battle at the Beach on Saturday against EKU, 4:15 p.m. ET, and Presbyterian at 6:30 p.m. Fans can tune in to the action on 88.1 WMUL-FM, online at www.marshall.edu/wmul and on Facebook Live through the Marshall University Softball team page.
