CONWAY, S.C. – The Marshall softball offense exploded on the second day of the Battle of the Beach, Saturday night as head coach Megan Smith earned her 400th career victory.
Â
The Thundering Herd defeated EKU 8-4 in the first game and then dominated Presbyterian 10-1 in the night cap. Marshall combined for six home runs throughout the day and tied the program record for home runs in a game with five against Presbyterian.
Â
"I think after yesterday we were disappointed in our offensive performance," coach Smith said. "I was really pleased to see us come back today and have such a dominating performance offensively in both games, especially the second one. Our pitching did a great job and our defense was solid, but our offense was dynamic today. I'm just really proud of the way our girls came back today."
Â
Game One: Marshall 8, EKU 4
The Herd offense got rolling right from the start on Saturday, scoring five runs in the first inning and then capping the game with the first homer of the day by senior Hannah Giammarino in the fifth. Marshall recorded eight hits as Giammarino, sophomore Armani Brown and freshman Mya Stevenson each had two hits.
Â
Senior Abigail Tolbert recorded her fourth win of the season with the complete game victory. Tolbert allowed four runs, all coming in the top of the second, but then shut down the Colonels through the rest of the contest. The senior right-hander finished with five strikeouts.
Â
In the first inning, sophomore Aly Harrell scored first on a bases loaded walk by junior Blakely Burch. Giammarino ripped her first hit of the day with a two RBI single that scored Stevenson and junior Sierra Huerta. Senior Hayden Ellis added two more runs on a double as Burch and Giammarino both scored.
Â
EKU responded with a grand slam in the second, but could not muster any more runs.
Â
In the fourth, senior Briana Daiss drove in Brown to give Marshall a 2-run lead, 6-4. The Herd added two more runs in the fifth as Giammarino smashed the fourth home run of her career and first with the Herd.
Â
Marshall did not get to celebrate long as it was a very quick turn-around for the nightcap.
Â
Game Two: Marshall 10, Presbyterian 1 (5 innings)
After only about 20 minutes in between games, Marshall thundered its way to 10 runs off eight hits with five home runs.
Â
The Herd's explosive performance at the plate, tied the program record for most home runs in a game. Marshall smashed five homers at Northern Kentucky on April 9, 2014.
Â
Huerta got it started in the first with a grand slam for the first homer of her Marshall career. Harrell added to the lead with a 3-run blast in the second inning to give Marshall a 7-1 lead.
Â
The long ball appeared again in the fourth when Harrell smacked her second of the game and third of the season to lead off the inning. Stevenson then drilled a solo shot to left to give Marshall back-to-back home runs.
Â
Marshall's record-tying fifth homer of the game was delivered by Giammarino with a solo shot in the fifth. The Herd led 10-1 and the defense held on in the bottom of the inning for the run-rule win.
Â
Junior Kailee Williamson went the distance for her second win of the season. Williamson allowed six hits, one run and struck out four.
Â
"I have been a part of a lot of good programs with a lot of good players and I am excited to have a lot more here," coach Smith said of reaching her 400th win.
Â
Marshall finishes the Battle of the Beach Sunday morning at 10:30 a.m., against the Towson Tigers.
