Men’s Basketball Beats Middle Tennessee With Team Effort

The win ended a four-game losing streak for the Herd

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – Marshall men's basketball (14-13, 7-7 C-USA) used a team effort with six double-figure scorers to down Middle Tennessee (8-19, 6-8 C-USA), 98-93, to seal the seventh seed in pod two and a spot in Frisco at the 2019 Conference USA Men's Basketball Tournament.
 
Marshall ended a four-game losing streak with the win.
 
"It was good to get a win," fifth-year head coach Dan D'Antoni said after the win. "I thought we played with the passion we'd been missing for a while. I finally get to smile again tonight."
 
The team effort was led by a team-high 20 points from C.J. Burks. The senior guard also had a career-high six steals to go with three assists. Burks went eight-for-16 from the field in the contest.
 
Jon Elmore dropped 19 points through the hoop as he went a perfect 11-of-11 at the free-throw line. He also tied for the team lead in assists with Burks, Jarrod West and Rondale Watson at three helpers.
 
Watson and Jannson Williams each made five baskets and scored 17 and 16 points, respectively. Watson went six-for-six from the charity stripe as all five of Williams' makes were from beyond-the-arc. The forward also rejected three shots and had two takeaways.
 
Taevion Kinsey scored 13 points while making 50 percent of his shots from the field. The freshman guard also brought down five rebounds in the victory.
 
Darius George collected 11 points and seven rebounds in the first start of his career at Marshall. George mad six of his seven free-throw attempts.
 
The two teams battled to a 41-41 tie at halftime. However, the Herd led for the majority in the half.
 
Marshall's Burks made a layup to take the opening lead of the half and eventually extended its lead to 12, 73-61, with 9:03 left in the game after Rondale Watson completed an and-one.
 
After Watson's play, Middle Tennessee went on a 15-4 run to pull the within one, 77-76, at 5:26 mark.
 
That's when Elmore kicked it in gear as he scored 15 of his 19 points in the final 5:03 of the game to help the Herd hold off the Blue Raiders.
 
Marshall went 33-of-40 at the free-throw line as Middle Tennessee made 22-of-26 from the line.
 
The Herd put up a shooting percentage of 48.2 from the field, including 40 percent from three-point range.
 
Notes
- C.J. Burks passed John Taft to crack the top 10 in steals in program history as Burks now has 139 career takeaways.
- Burks also passed George Stone's mark of 1,723 points for ninth most in program history with 1,725 career points.
- The 33 makes from the free-throw line are tied for the sixth-most in a game in program history.
- Marshall had six players with 10 or more points for the first time since Nov. 26, 2017, against Concord.
- Burks recorded his 11th game of 20 or more points in the win.
- Jon Elmore is 40 points shy of becoming the all-time leader in C-USA history.
 
Up Next
The Herd sit in pod two with North Texas, FAU, FIU and Louisiana Tech. Marshall will host FAU and FIU, while making return trips to North Texas and La Tech. The Herd will find out if they'll be on the road or at home for its next contest and will either begin play on Saturday Feb. 23 or Thursday Feb. 28 later tonight.
