Â
HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – The Marshall softball team lost the series finale to the UTSA Roadrunners, 4-2, on Sunday at Dot Hicks Field. The Herd won the series, two games to one.
Â
The Thundering Herd is now 21-9 overall and 4-2 in Conference USA. The Roadrunners improve to 15-14 and 6-3 in conference action.
Â
Senior pitcher Abigail Tolbert recorded a career-high nine strikeouts in the loss. Tolbert has 95 strikeouts for the year and 182 in her career.
Â
The game was a pitching duel throughout. Neither team had a runner reach base until the third inning, and both came from free passes as the UTSA player was walked and junior Blakely Burch was hit by a pitch for the 11th time this season. Burch now leads the Herd in hit-by-pitches.
Â
The Roadrunners took a 1-0 lead in the fifth, scored one more in the sixth and capped the day with two more runs in the top of the seventh.
Â
Marshall took advantage of some UTSA mistakes in the bottom of the seventh to fight back into the contest. Senior Briana Daiss led off reaching safely on an infield error. Burch and senior Hayden Ellis joined Daiss on base with back-to-back walks to load the bases. After a Roadrunner pitching change, sophomore Armani Brown hit a sacrifice fly to center that scored Daiss and allowed Burch to move to third. A wild pitch brought Burch home and moved Ellis to second. The Herd could not find the timely hit to complete the comeback.
Â
Sophomore Aly Harrell recorded the only hit of the game for Marshall, and was also walked for the 28th time this season. Freshman Rachel Pennington was brought in to run for Harrell after the base hit and stole second. Pennington is 9-for-9 in stolen bases this season.
Â
The Herd hits the road next week during Marshall University's spring break. The Herd travels to Longwood on March 26 for a single game at 6 p.m. Then, Marshall heads to No. 19 James Madison on March 27 for a single game at 4 p.m. The Herd will then head south to Hattiesburg, Miss., for a three-game series at Southern Miss, March 30-31.
