Tennis Falls to Cincinnati in Neutral-Site Match

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – Madi Ballow extended her singles win streak to five matches Saturday afternoon but the Cincinnati Bearcats defeated the Marshall women's tennis team, 4-1, at the Racquet Club of Memphis.

"Give credit to Cincinnati for fighting back after getting down in the singles matches," head coach John Mercer said.

Cincinnati jumped out to an early 1-0 lead after taking the doubles point. Anna Smith and Daniela Dankanych were defeated by Ioana Guna and Anna Philp, 6-4, while Victoria Walter and Matilde Mulatero fell to Emma Miceli and Caroline Morton, 6-2. Ballow and Liz Stefancic were trailing against Antonella Bramato and Alexia Coutino, 5-4, but their match went unfinished.

The Herd raced out to leads in each of the six singles matches before inclement weather pushed the matches indoors. From there, the Bearcats seized an advantage and won three of the four completed singles matches to clinch the win. Miceli defeated Mulatero, 7-6, 6-0, while Maria Santilli defeated Dankanych, 7-5, 6-0. Stefancic pushed Morton to the brink before falling, 7-6, 7-6. Smith and Walter were in the third sets of their matches against Bramato and Guna, respectively, but both went unfinished.

Ballow picked up the lone point of the day for the Herd, downing Philp in straight sets, 6-2, 6-2.

"It's good to see Madison continue to improve," Mercer said.
