Tennis Drops Road Match at Memphis

MEMPHIS, Tenn. – The Marshall women's tennis team was defeated on the road Sunday afternoon by the Memphis Tigers, 6-1, at the Racquet Club of Memphis.

Daniela Dankanych won a pair of matches for the Herd against the Tigers, taking her singles match at the No. 4 spot in straight sets and pairing with Anna Smith to win a doubles match at the top spot.

Despite taking the No. 1 doubles match, the Herd dropped the doubles point. Liz Stefancic and Madi Ballow were defeated at the No. 2 spot, 6-0, while Victoria Walter and Matilde Mulatero fell at the No. 3 spot, 6-3.

Memphis' momentum from doubles play continued into singles play, as the Tigers took five of the six singles matches. Lina Hohnhold defeated Ballow in straight sets, 6-1, 6-2, to double the Tigers lead early in singles play. After Dankanych defeated Hannah Davies in straight sets, 6-2, 6-4, Memphis claimed the next four matches. Stefancic was defeated by Laura Bente, 7-6, 6-2, and Walter fell to Aleks Topalovic, 6-4, 6-4, clinching the match for the home team. Mulatero battled in her match before falling to Katherine Cao, 6-1, 7-6(3). Smith fell to Alisha Reayer in a super tiebreak, 7-6(4), 6-7(3), 1-0(8).

"I thought we competed better as a whole team today than we did yesterday," head coach John Mercer said. "Everyone is looking forward to getting back after a long, but good, spring break trip and getting back to work."
