Softball Struggles in Doubleheader Loss at FIU

MIAMI – The Marshall softball team dropped the doubleheader, 9-1 and 5-1, Saturday evening to the FIU Panthers at Felsburg Field. The series finale is set for Sunday at 1 p.m.
The Thundering Herd fell to 25-15 overall and 8-6 in Conference USA. The Panthers improved to 22-19 and 4-10 conference play.
Game One: FIU 9, Marshall 1 (5 innings)
The Panthers used seven runs in the third inning leading to the run-rule victory. Junior Sierra Huerta scored the lone run for the Herd with a solo home run in fourth.
Sophomore Aly Harrell drew a free pass in all three plate appearances with two walks and one hit-by-pitch. Sophomore Armani Brown recorded the only other hit in game one with a single to right.
Senior pitcher Abigail Tolbert had the start and pitched 2.2 innings, allowed eight hits, nine runs and struck out two. Senior Ali Burdette finished the game in the circle for the final 1.1 innings and allowed just one hit with a strikeout.
Game Two: FIU 5, Marshall 1
The second game of the doubleheader was a pitching and defensive battle until the seventh inning when the Herd took a one-run lead, but then the Panthers finished off the day with a walk-off grand slam after tying the game.
Marshall recorded three hits in the contest as sophomore Katie Adams, freshman Mya Stevenson and senior Briana Daiss had one each. Sophomore Rachel Rousseau hit a sacrifice fly in the top of the seventh that scored senior Hannah Giammarino for the first run of the game.
The Panthers tied the game with a bases loaded walk in the bottom of the seventh and then ended the night with the grand slam from Jessica Rivera.
Junior Kailee Williamson got the start in the circle and went the distance, picking up her third loss of the season.
