Baseball Drops Series Opener to UTSA

5/3/2019 8:12:00 PM | Baseball

Hanon returned to the lineup after a 22-game absence

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. –  After a one hour and 49-minute weather delay, Herd baseball (23-23, 10-12) fell in game one of the series on Friday, 11-7, to UTSA (22-24, 10-12) at the Kennedy Center.

Six of the Roadrunners 11 runs were unearned.

After Joshua Shapiro recorded a 1-2-3 inning in the top of the first, Shane Hanon and Elvis Peralta each and moved into scoring position after a balk by UTSA starter Karan Patal. Then with Tucker Linder at the plate, Hanon scored on a wild pitch to put Marshall up 1-0.

The Herd extended its lead in the second with a two-out single by Geordon Blanton that scored Luke Edwards to make it a 2-0 game.

The Roadrunners then took a 6-2 lead after a pair of three-run innings in the top of the third and fifth.

Marshall made a comeback in the bottom of the fifth as Erik Rodriguez lead the inning off with a double and was then singled home by Hanon. Elvis Peralta, Jr., then singled to place runners at first and second with one out. Linder then singled to center scoring Hanon for an RBI as Peralta scored on an error by the centerfielder and Linder went to third with no outs. Patal was pulled after the play for his shortest outing of the season, four innings, and broke up a string of eight consecutive quality starts.

After a pair of outs, Raul Cabrera brought home Linder to tie the contest at 6-6.

UTSA quickly regained the lead in the top of the sixth with a pair of runs, but the Herd pulled back within one, 8-7, as Hanon brought home Blanton for his second RBI of the game.

However, the Roadrunners scored insurance runs in the seventh, eighth and ninth as Marshall fell 11-7.

NOTES
- Hanon played for the time in the last 22 games due to injury
- The Herd scored in two different innings without scoring a hit.
