Peralta, Shapiro and Two Baseball Signees Are Taken on Day Three of 2019 MLB Draft

Peralta was taken by the Oakland A’s in the 26th round, while Shapiro was selected by the Milwaukee Brewers in the 34th round

HUNTINGTON, W.Va. – It was a big day for the Marshall baseball program on day three of the 2019 MLB Draft as redshirt-junior shortstop Elvis Peralta, Jr., senior left-handed starting pitcher Joshua Shapiro and signees Zane Zurbrugg and Ryan Leitch were taken on the final day.
 
Peralta was selected with the 794th pick (26th round) by the Oakland A's, Zurbrugg was taken 823rd (27th round) by the Milwaukee Brewers, Leitch was selected by the Cincinnati Reds 894th (30th round) and Shapiro was also taken by the Brewers with the 1,033rd pick (34th round).
 
Leitch is a catcher who played high school baseball at Sinclair Secondary School in Whitby, Ontario, Canada. He's listed at 6-2, 210 pounds by Prep Baseball Report and is an incoming freshman.
 
Zurbrugg will be a junior-college transfer from Shoreline Community College and will be a junior in eligibility next season. He is listed as a 6-4, 195-pound centerfielder by 2019 MLB draft tracker.
 
Peralta was a force in C-USA in his first season after redshirting last season and transferring from Crowder College. He put up a slash line of .357/.425/.571, all bests among Marshall qualifying batters. Peralta had a team-leading nine homers with eight coming in conference play. He also had a team-leading 80 hits, tied for third most in a season in program history. Peralta has helped turn 38 double plays. His 42 RBI are second most for Marshall this season. If he does not return to Huntington, his .357 batting average will be the 10th best for a career in program history. Peralta was named first-team all-conference and was named to the all-tournament team at the C-USA Championship.
 
Shapiro had a 3.61 ERA in a team-leading 84.2 IP this season with 80 strikeouts. His team-leading .226 opposing batting average. Shapiro recorded five wins in 14 starts this season and struck out a career-high 12 batters while allowing just three hits in a no-decision team-win over Louisiana Tech on Apr. 18. He wrapped up his Thundering Herd career with 233 strikeouts, third most in program history, in 270 innings, fourth most in a career in program history, in 43 starts, fifth most in program history, and 14 wins, tied for ninth in program history. Shapiro was named to named second-team all-Conference USA and was a member of the conference's all-academic team.
