Volleyball Opens the 2019 Season at the Indiana Invitational

Herd set to take on UT-Martin, Indiana and Santa Clara
BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Marshall volleyball team gets the 2019 season rolling Friday at the Indiana Invitational. The Thundering Herd will play UT-Martin, Indiana and Santa Clara.

Marshall is led by first-year head coach Ari Aganus as well as an experienced group of returners. Redshirt junior Ciara Debell was named second team All-Conference USA in 2018 and was also listed as a preseason all-conference selection. Debell made an immediate impact in her first season with the Herd, leading the team with 437 kills. Her 4.24 kills per set was good for sixth all-time in program history. Senior Amber Weber played all 108 sets at Libero in 2018 and was the vocal leader on the floor. Weber finished the season with 545 digs, second-most all-time at Marshall, and her 5.05 digs per set was best in program history.

Other key returners for the Herd in 2019 are senior Ivana Trencheva (119 kills), junior Destiny Leon (20 kills and nine blocks) sophomores Joelle Coulter (113 kills), Gabrielle Coulter (851 assists), Sarah Schank (81 kills and 216 digs), Mion Weldon (52 kills and 31 blocks), Isa Dostall (52 kills and 56 blocks) and Autumn Elswick (161 digs and 112 assists).

Coach Aganus also brings in a group of talented newcomers with transfers Syndey Lostumo and Zoie Holley along with freshmen Meagan Camden, Megan Taylor and Gracie Brumfield.

Opponents
UT-Martin is coming off a 14-17 season in 2018 that finished with a first-round loss to Murray State in the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament. The Skyhawks return three of its top four kills producers from last year in Hannah Phillips (295), Gintare Mackeviciute (204) and Justine Walker (195). Kenzie Hinshaw returns for her junior season after leading the team with 965 assists and was third with 282 digs. Head coach Jaclynn Wilson enters her fifth season at the helm for the Skyhawks.

Indiana was 16-15 in 2018 that also included 11 matches against ranked opponents. Head coach Steve Aird enters his second season leading the program. The Hoosiers return 5-of-7 players who contributed at least 167 kills with Breanna Edwards (360) and Deyshia Lofton (281) leading the way. Lofton was named second team All-Big 10 in 2018 as she produced a .336 kill percentage and also led the team with 130 total blocks. Victoria Brisack led the team in assists with 708 and is back for her senior year. Junior Bayli Lebo led in digs with 525.

This will be Marshall's first-ever meeting against the Santa Clara Broncos. Santa Clara finished 2018 with a 6-24 record. The Broncos return 13 players as head coach Erin Lindsey takes over the program. Michelle Shaffer (297 kills) and Alexa Dryer (212 kills) led the way on offense and return for Santa Clara. Dryer also led the team with 93 total blocks. Sophomore Liliana Light led the squad with 673 assists last season and was third in digs with 187.

Following the weekend in Bloomington, Marshall will travel to Washington D.C. for the Georgetown Invitational (Sept. 6-7).
