Volleyball Starts Off Aganus Era and 2019 with Sweep over UT-Martin

Debell and Schank combine for 27 kills

BLOOMINGTON, Ind. – The Marshall volleyball team swept the UT-Martin Skyhawks (25-19, 25-20, 25-23) Friday morning to jump start 2019 and the head coach Ari Aganus era with a victory.
Marshall is 1-0 while UT-Martin begins the year 0-1. The Thundering Herd will face the host team, Indiana Hooisers, Friday night at 8 p.m. There will be live video for the match.
"I'm really proud of the hard work they've put in all preseason," coach Aganus said following her first Herd win. "I'm happy with how we executed against a strong UT-Martin team. We are really happy with our setters distribution. Mion Weldon and Megan Taylor not committing any errors played an intricate role in our success as well as having the consistency of Sarah Schank and Ciara Debell.
"Amber Weber's passion and leadership all preseason allowed us to defend as well as we did today. Very excited to see our progression the rest of the weekend."
Redshirt junior Ciara Debell led the way with 16 kills including recording 10 in the first set. Sophomore Sarah Schank tied her career-high with 11 kills in the victory. Sophomore Mion Weldon tallied six kills, freshman Megan Taylor had five, junior Destiny Leon tallied three and sophomore Isa Dostal added two.
Junior Sydney Lostumo and sophomore Gabrielle Coulter rotated at setter and Coulter finished with 23 assists while Lostumo had 13. Schank added three service aces and seven digs. Senior Amber Weber again led the defense and tallied 11 digs for the match. Dostal recorded six total blocks while Leon added four and Taylor had three.
Marshall jumped out to the early lead in the first set and held it the rest of the way. Debell with her 10 kills in the first set also had a hitting percentage of .500. A kill by Debell put it at set-point and then the Herd finished it off from an attack error by the Skyhawks.
The second set featured four lead changes and the set was tied eight times. Schank recorded five kills in the second set including two late points to help push Marshall out in front. With the score 23-20, the Herd tallied two-straight blocks by Dostal and Taylor to close out the second set 25-20.
Marshall came out to an early 3-0 lead in the third set, but UT-Martin fought back to tie the set at 7-7. From there the two teams went back-and-forth with the score tied 11 more times and eight lead changes. The Herd grabbed moved out in front, 23-22, on a kill by Schank and then held on as Schank also provided the final kill of the match.
